Queensbury

Queensbury Academy have installed a total of 88.25kWp Solar PV array on their roofs.

The Background

Queensbury Academy is a large secondary school based in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. They are very quickly progressing and improving and have recently been recognised as a good school by OFSTED and one which is rapidly moving towards becoming outstanding. As an Eco-School they are conscious of their environment and feel it is important for the benefit of future generations to preserve the stocks of fossil fuels for as long as possible. Queensbury Academy has a vast expanse of flat roof area which made Solar PV a great choice for them and with the Carbon Trust approved funding allowed them to install with no additional outlay to the school. The long term nature of Solar PV installations which will be in place for over 20 years can be a bit daunting. I am sure some of us will not be around to see the final returns towards the end of the system life, but hopefully we will leave a legacy for future users of the buildings to benefit from.

Testimonial

As an individual I have had a long standing interest in energy saving and renewable energy both at home and at work. The obvious cost savings on imported energy and the income from the Feed in Tariff scheme were a prime consideration. However the other benefits such as an increased awareness of energy issues amongst both students and staff together with the chance to monitor and use the data produced to give feedback and directly build this data into lessons. Reducing the Academies carbon footprint will show that we are doing our part in reducing our impact on the environment for today and for years to come. Despite an aging set of buildings we have managed to build in modern technology systems that will produce a proportion of our power and protect us financially from future energy demands. – Tony Cella – Site Manager
